1979-87: Shanghai Ballet Company

Danced principal roles in Swan Lake, Don Quixote, Coppelia, Le Corsaire, Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Carmen, The Nutcracker, Balanchine’s Tarantella, Napoli, and Flower Festival at Genzano.

1987

Won a Gold Medal in the Second National Ballet Competition, becoming the most famous dancer in China.

1988

Received a scholarship from the San Francisco Ballet School.

1990: San Francisco Ballet Company

Became the first Chinese dancer to join the San Francisco Ballet Company.

1992-98

Promoted to Soloist and danced principal roles in classical and contemporary ballets including Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker.

Worked with many of the world’s most celebrated choreographers, including Mark Morris, David Bentley, James Kudelka, Redha, Helgi Tomasson, Lew Christensen, and Michael Uthoff.

Toured with SFB to Paris, Edinburgh, the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, The City Center New York, and performed at the San Francisco Opera House.

1998

Transitioned to a role as teacher and choreographer, instructing at the San Francisco Ballet School, San Francisco Dance Center, Marin Ballet School, Marin Ballet Theatre, Westlake Performing Arts Center, Ayako School of Ballet, and the Chinese Dance Academy.

1999-Present: Ming-Hai Wu School of Ballet

Founded the Ming Hai Wu School of Ballet to train young people in classical ballet, to prepare them for dance competitions, and to prepare them for annual dance recitals.

Skills

  • Proven expertise in imparting classical ballet technique, including pas de deux technique, to students of all ages, but particularly to those under 18.
  • Extensive knowledge of classical and contemporary choreography.
  • Knowledge of character and ethnic dance.
  • Ability to convey the nuance of roles from soloists to principals.
  • As a result of many years of teaching, proficiency in structuring and teaching ballet classes and imparting musical and artistic skills.
  • Skill at creating and preparing students to participate in recitals.
  • Proven ability to work with people of all backgrounds in a respectful and convivial manner.
